Does Chiropractic Actually Work?

Does Chiropractic Actually Work?

From a medical perspective, chiropractic can seem quite artificial to the average eye in its means of healing. However, once one has a full understanding of what chiropractic medicine is and how it works, they can see the true benefit to the holistic healing approach.

Chiropractic is a unique form of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders within the musculoskeletal system. With the spine being the nerve center of most musculoskeletal functions, chiropractors spend years of training in just learning how to properly treat and manage the spine. Among the countless hours chiropractors spend on learning ways to treat and prevent musculoskeletal disorders, chiropractors like Dr. Melissa Wilke have extensive knowledge in the areas of acupuncture, biomechanics, sports medicine and soft tissue therapies which strengthens the level and effectiveness of treatment they can provide to the patient.

Now, how exactly does this heal? As stated previously, with the spine being the functional-nerve center to the entire body, more sicknesses arise from improper posture and musculoskeletal function than the average person can even realize. Take chronic migraines for a quick example. Adjustments to the spine have been proven to improve circulation, motor function, head and upper body posture, etc.; all these improvements that chiropractic adjustments deliver, have shown to improve and/or correct what is causing the migraines. Patients feel better sooner and without the need for invasive medications or surgery.

Is massage therapy the same thing? Massage therapy is relaxing and effective at reducing stress physically and emotionally. Massage therapy focuses on the muscular system, which is integral to improving the function of the musculoskeletal system, however it does not improve joint function directly and therefore may not affect nervous system function. It makes the most sense to use aspects of both therapies together, which Dr. Wilke does on every visit. She attends to the needs of your joint/skeletal, nerve and muscular systems to ensure the longest lasting, most effective treatment possible on every visit.

It does not seem likely that chronic stomach pain, migraines, fatigue, etc. could be linked to the musculoskeletal system, but that is exactly why chiropractors take the holistic health approach. In many cases of chronic pain and illness, doctors can prescribe medicine that treats the symptoms, but not the source of the problem. Chiropractors do everything in their power to treat the root cause. So, why not give it a try?
