The causes of Modic (degenerative) changes are not yet fully understood, and their significance is a subject of ongoing debate.  Some researchers suggest a direct correlation between Modic changes and back pain, while most authors have not established a consistent relationship - this means that having a modic (degenerative) change present in your scan, does NOT necessarily mean you will suffer from pain.
